A planetary (or epicyclical) gearbox uses epicyclical gears for speed reduction. It is composed of one or more toothed wheels turning around a rotating shaft. Each rotates on its own axis as well as revolving around the central shaft. This provides great reduction capability in a small space, making them common in automatic transmissions.
In an epicyclic or planetary gear train, several spur gears distributed evenly around the circumference run between a gear with internal teeth and a gear with external teeth on a concentric orbit. The circulation of the spur gear takes place in analogy to the orbiting of the planets in the solar system.
